It is our pleasure to announce the upcoming joint meeting of the 11th International Breast Surgery Workshop (IBSW) and the 7th World Consensus Conference on BIA-ALCL, which will take place in the breathtaking setting of Ischia Italy, on 7-9 May 2026. Following the success of previous editions, this premier event will once again bring together global experts and professionals to share the latest advancements in breast surgery, innovative reconstructive techniques, and the most recent research and consensus on BIA-ALCL.

New in 2026

For the first time, the program will also feature the MIRA (Minimally Invasive Reconstruction & Aesthetics) Symposium, a state-of-the-art of minimally invasive approaches in both aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, set to open the meeting on 7 May.

Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo

MD, PhD

Professor Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo is considered one of the major world-experts on breast reconstruction with autologous tissues and breast implants technology. He has specifically contributed to the development and affirmation of DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap procedure, being the first to perform a DIEP flap in Sweden and in Italy back on 1998 and then persisting on a more regular basis with the establishment of the Breast Unit at Sant’Andrea Hospital, having personally performed more than 850 DIEP flap and 2,500 breast reconstruction till nowadays. The technique of using abdominal tissues from the patient itself to reconstruct the breast, has been described first in Sweden – where he started – and later improved in United States and Europe, with Santanelli’s contribute. In the last years he dedicated himself to the understanding and treatment of the most frightening breast implant complication, the BIA-ALCL. He served, as expert member, the Working Group of the Scientific Committee of Health Environment and Emerging Risk (SCHEER) from the European Commission on Health (SANTE-2), and also the AAPS Consensus Panel on Implant Safety and BIA-ALCL. He was awarded Honorary Professor in Plastic Surgery at University of Novi Sad, Serbia, Honorary Member of the Serbian Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Visiting Professor in Plastic Surgery at University of South Florida a Tampa, and Honorary member of the Swedish Association of Plastic Surgeons. He also received Laurea Honoris Causa from University Carol Davila, Bucharest, Romania. He hold the position as EURAPS General Secretary from 2015 to 2021, and President from 2023 to 2024. Professional effort of Professor Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo has produced not only clinical but also scientific results with more than 195 original publications on international and national reviews and 37 chapters on international and national books.

Mark W. Clemens

MD, MBA, FACS

Mark W. Clemens, MD, is a tenured professor of plastic surgery and the Associate Vice President of Perioperative Services for MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas in Houston. He completed plastic surgical training at Georgetown University, research fellowships at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Harvard Children’s Hospital, a microsurgery fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and a master’s degree of business from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Business.
Dr. Clemens’ research interests include breast implant associated ALCL, as well as robotic-assisted, microvascular, and prosthetic reconstructive surgery of the breast. Dr. Clemens has lectured in over 30 countries and written more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and 50 book chapters. He is the breast section editor and on the editorial board of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He is an author for National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines on Lymphoma and an invited content expert on breast implant safety for the US FDA and the European Commission. He was a member of the surgical team that performed the world’s first skull and scalp transplant. Dr. Clemens cofounded the annual World Consensus Conference on BIA-ALCL which meets with the International Breast Surgery Workshop, and now in its 11th year, has had over 20,000 attendees to date. He is the published author of Complications in Reconstructive Surgery from Springer Publishing as well as Phoenix Rising Empower and Transform Through Breast Reconstruction which, upon release, topped Amazon charts across breast cancer.
