It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 12th International Breast Surgery Workshop (IBSW) and the 8th World Consensus Conference on BIA-ALCL, taking place in the historic city of Athens, Greece, on 23–24 April 2027.
Recognized as an international meeting dedicated to breast surgery, IBSW brings together leading surgeons, researchers, and healthcare professionals to share the latest advances in aesthetic, reconstructive, and oncologic breast surgery. The meeting focuses on surgical innovation, practical techniques, and evidence-based solutions that improve patient care.

Professor Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo is considered one of the major world-experts on breast reconstruction with autologous tissues and breast implants technology. He has specifically contributed to the development and affirmation of DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap procedure, being the first to perform a DIEP flap in Sweden and in Italy back on 1998 and then persisting on a more regular basis with the establishment of the Breast Unit at Sant’Andrea Hospital, having personally performed more than 850 DIEP flap and 2,500 breast reconstruction till nowadays. The technique of using abdominal tissues from the patient itself to reconstruct the breast, has been described first in Sweden – where he started – and later improved in United States and Europe, with Santanelli’s contribute. In the last years he dedicated himself to the understanding and treatment of the most frightening breast implant complication, the BIA-ALCL. He served, as expert member, the Working Group of the Scientific Committee of Health Environment and Emerging Risk (SCHEER) from the European Commission on Health (SANTE-2), and also the AAPS Consensus Panel on Implant Safety and BIA-ALCL. He was awarded Honorary Professor in Plastic Surgery at University of Novi Sad, Serbia, Honorary Member of the Serbian Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Visiting Professor in Plastic Surgery at University of South Florida a Tampa, and Honorary member of the Swedish Association of Plastic Surgeons. He also received Laurea Honoris Causa from University Carol Davila, Bucharest, Romania. He hold the position as EURAPS General Secretary from 2015 to 2021, and President from 2023 to 2024. Professional effort of Professor Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo has produced not only clinical but also scientific results with more than 195 original publications on international and national reviews and 37 chapters on international and national books.

Mark W. Clemens

Dr. Mark W. Clemens is a tenured Professor of Plastic Surgery and Associate Vice President of Perioperative Services at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He completed plastic surgery training at Georgetown University, research fellowships at the National Institutes of Health and Harvard Children’s Hospital, a microsurgery fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
An internationally recognized expert in breast implant safety, BIA-ALCL, and advanced breast reconstruction, Dr. Clemens has lectured in more than 30 countries and authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and 50 book chapters. He serves as Breast Section Editor for Aesthetic Surgery Journal and has served as an invited breast implant safety expert for the U.S. FDA and the European Commission.
He was part of the surgical team that performed the world’s first skull and scalp transplant and co-founded the World Consensus Conference on BIA-ALCL, held along with the International Breast Surgery Workshop, now in its 12th year, with more than 20,000 attendees worldwide to date. His books include Complications in Reconstructive Surgery from Springer Publishing and Phoenix Rising: Empower and Transform Through Breast Reconstruction, an Amazon chart-topping breast cancer release.

Professor Efterpi C. Demiri is Professor of Plastic Surgery at the School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Papageorgiou Hospital. An internationally recognized expert in reconstructive plastic surgery and microsurgery, she has held visiting professorships at the Universities of Helsinki, Illinois at Chicago, and Athens.
Professor Demiri has served in numerous leadership roles within European plastic surgery organizations, including President of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS, 2024–2025). She is an EBOPRAS examiner, author of more than 125 peer-reviewed publications, editor of six books, and contributor to 30 textbook chapters. She has delivered over 330 invited lectures worldwide. Her clinical and research interests focus on breast and lymphedema surgery, reconstructive microsurgery, and hand and lower extremity reconstruction.
Elias Athanasopoulos

Colonel Elias Athanasopoulos, MD, is a HellenicBoard and FEBOBRAS Certified Plastic Surgeon since 2002. He is a Medical Officer ofthe Hellenic Army since 1992.
He was the Chief of Plastic Surgery Department(2010-2025) and Chair of the Training and Clinical Research Council of 424 General Military Training Hospital in Thessaloniki. Since Feb 2025 he is the Deputy Commander of the Hellenic Military Academy of Combat Support Officers. He is a graduate of the Command and Staff College of the Hellenic Army, the Supreme Joint War Academy and the National Defense College of Greece.
Dr Athanasopoulos specializes in trauma and oncology, rhinoplasty, breast and revision surgery. He is an invited Speaker and Faculty for Congresses, live surgery and cadaveric courses of the Hellenic Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (HESPRAS). Since 2019 he has been elected for three consecutive elections as President of the Board of Directors for HESPRAS.
